Visual Merchandisers

Visual Merchandisers design and set up visual displays of products or services in retail settings. They should have visual creativity and design abilities to build displays that are original and visually appealing to customers. They may display new products, lines and promotional items.

Duties and tasks

  • Compose drawings and representations to show display products, colours, layout, etc.
  • Coordinate signs and ticketing for display as well as appropriate lighting to create desired effect
  • Create plan for promotional and regular displays and submit to managers for approval
  • Propose budget for props and accessories needed in displays
  • Select and arrange goods for display in permanent settings, showing variations offered at establishment or best goods
  • Set up and construct attractive displays of clothing or products in store, salesroom, and front window display for greatest benefit
  • Work with managers to update displays for promotional events and changing seasonal merchandise and determine leading articles for display

Working conditions

Visual Merchandisers typically work varied schedules Mondays to Fridays and possibly weekends. They may work during store hours when customers are low or after store hours in the evenings or early mornings to set up and take down displays to avoid interfering and customers seeing displays before they are completed.
