Debt Collector

Debt Collectors pursue individuals or companies that owe debts or have outstanding accounts with clients. They are hired by the government or companies to identify those in debt to them and to seek out and arrange for payment of debt. Debt Collectors must be persistent and practice determination in locating debtors and ensuring that their clients are paid the full amount owed.

Duties and tasks

  • Initiating legal action if debtors do not comply with attempts to collect payment
  • Observe legal regulations and debt collection confines to seek and collect debt
  • Record attempts to notify debtors and communications with them, as well as collected payments
  • Refer debtors to clients in case of disputes or in repayment plans if they cannot make current payments
  • Set up payment locations and transfer details to ensure clients receive the money or property owed to them
  • Use multiple forms of outreach to locate and notify debtors of outstanding balances and overdue payments
  • Work with clients, insurance claims departments, credit staff, accounting departments, solicitors and private investigators to determine the best way to get payment from debtors

Working conditions

Debt Collectors typically work Monday to Friday but may need to work nights or weekends if debtors do not respond to telephonic or postal notifications and they need to attempt to meet with them in person. Debt Collectors may work partly in an office setting preparing documents and researching claims and debtors, while they will also spend some time meeting with debtors and clients and arranging for payment.
