Insurance Investigator and Loss Adjuster

Insurance Investigators and Loss Adjusters evaluate insurance claims and determine the value of lost or damaged property and businesses. They also examine insured property to ensure they are meeting with conditions and preventative measures and regulations. They must have strong critical thinking skills and be able to investigate the possible causes for loss and identify fraud.

Duties and tasks

  • Assess the causes of damaged or lost property and conduct investigations into insurance claims
  • Calculate losses for businesses or residences as a result of fire or other disasters
  • Estimate loss and damage costs to insurance companies and advise on legitimacy of claims
  • Estimate repair costs of damaged equipment or property by inspecting damaged sites from insurance claims
  • Gather information and provide recommendations for risk reduction activities and to set premium rates for insurance plans
  • Inspect property or business security systems, smoke detectors and safety regulations to ensure that proper regulations and precautions have been followed
  • Interview different witnesses and professionals to help establish legitimacy of insurance claims, identifying possible fraud cases
  • Prepare reports detailing evaluations of insurance claims and losses

Working conditions

Insurance Investigators and Loss Adjusters typically work Mondays to Fridays, but may be required to work evenings or weekends in the case of an accident or site area that needs to be examined immediately.
