Operators (Switchboard)
Operators (Switchboard) operate communication equipment to relay incoming, outgoing and interoffice calls. Operators (Switchboard) may provide general information by phone or in person.
Duties and tasks
- Answers incoming calls and greets callers, provides information and transfers calls
- Arranges conference calls when requested
- Operates communication systems, such as switchboard, intercom or public address
- Pages individuals to inform them of incoming calls
- Routes emergency calls
- Writes down and relays messages

- Training in customer service
Working conditions
Operators (Switchboard) usually work in open spaced areas and serve as receptionists to the public in addition to manning the switchboard. Much of their time is spent sitting at the switchboard. Operators (Switchboard) often work whatever shift they are scheduled for.
