This unit emphasises comprehensive knowledge and application of the skills, conventions, processes and strategies for teaching English in Primary School (Australian Professional Standards for Teachers, Standard 2, know the content and how to teach it). Students develop personal and professional literacies, an English teaching philosophy and extensive instructional and pedagogical strategies for promoting children's literacy during the primary school years.

At the completion of this unit students will be able to:

  1. develop a knowledge base of skills, conventions and processes of language, literature and literacies
  2. critique and contest current theories and issues in English teaching
  3. analyse effective teaching of skills, processes and strategies in language, literature and literacies
  4. evaluate skills, processes and strategies for becoming an effecive teacher of language literature and literacies
  5. demonstrate knowledge and application of professional literacies.
