The Master of Science (Science and Mathematics Education) provides experienced teachers and educators with a practical toolkit for professional development. The course includes both small scale research projects and coursework units covering effective use of ICT in schools and classroom learning environments, pedagogical issues related to the use of computers, the impact on the teacher's role and the use of multimedia and the Internet in the classroom.

This course takes a highly practical and hands-on approach to developing research skills, and is designed to encourage students to identify questions for further investigation. Students will explore a range of research methodologies and methods used to investigate educational settings as well as ethics and the role for the educational researcher.

There are no compulsory on-campus attendance requirements in any Master of Science (Science and Mathematics Education) units offered through Open Universities Australia.

Please note that the Master of Science degree does not provide a teaching qualification (there is no practicum) and therefore does not enable a person to qualify as a teacher. Work and assessment in units is designed so that students can relate the work to their own teaching or other educational work such as that in museums. The degree is suitable for both primary and secondary teachers as well as those at the post-secondary level.

On completion of the course students will be able to:

  1. apply knowledge and understanding of science and mathematics education research to improve their professional practice
  2. think critically, creatively and reflectively to identify and generate solutions to issues in science and mathematics education
  3. access, snythesise and critically evaluate data from a range of sources related to science and mathematics education
  4. use appropriate written, visual and oral communication skills in interactions with others in a professional setting
  5. select, access and use appropriate technologies to improve science and mathematics education
  6. sustain intellectual curosity and take responsibility for ongoing professional learning and personal development
  7. recognise and appreciate the contribution of the global community to advances in science and mathematics education
  8. demonstrate respect for individual human rights and cultural diversity
  9. work independently and collaboratively with colleagues and demonstrate leadership and guidance in professional practice.

The Master of Science (Science and Mathematics Education) provides an opportunity for students to demonstrate their professional and personal development to meet their teacher registration requirements or to gain employment seniority in their educational setting. Graduates of this course may apply to continue their studies at a doctoral level.

Applicants require a four year University qualification and recognised teaching experience for entry into this course. International applicants must have completed a four year degree and teaching experience.

English Language Proficiency Requirements

Applicants need to meet Curtin’s English Language requirement as all courses are taught in English. If your education courses were not solely in English, as per the International Handbook of Universities or the World Higher Education database, please attach a scanned original copy of English Proficiency Test results. Admission requires an overall IELTS (or equivalent test) score of at least 6.5 and competence in all test components (IELTS score of 6.0).

It is highly recommended that students enrol in SMEC627 Science and Mathematics Education Research Methods as their first unit. Full-time students can choose to enrol in SMEC625 Science and Mathematics Education Multimedia as a second unit.

To qualify for the award of Master of Science (Science and Mathematics Education) students must complete eight units.

Applications for Credit for Recognised Learning (CRL) are assessed on a case by case basis according to Curtin University policies which is available at http://policies.curtin.edu.au/local/docs/policy/Credit_for_Recognised_Learning_Manual.pdf.

Students must be admitted in an award course of study before lodging their completed CRL application, along with all necessary documentation for a formal assessment.

The course Master of Science (Science and Mathematics Education) has been withdrawn. This is to be superseded by the new course, Master of Education, which includes a suite of optional units relating to Science Technology Engineering & Mathematics (STEM).

  • All core units in the course will continue to be offered during 2017. During 2018, students may need to complete alternate, equivalent units in order to meet the graduation requirements. These alternate units form part of the Master of Education course and will be offered in Study Periods rather than Sessions. An amended study plan will be provided to each student who has not completed the award by the end of Session 2, 2017.
  • The equivalent units are as follows:

* SMEC622 Science & Maths Education Classroom Climate is equivalent to EDMS501 Science Technology Engineering & Mathematics Learning Environments
* SMEC611 Science & Maths Education Teaching and Learning is equivalent to EDMS500 Introduction to Science Technology Engineering & Mathematics
* SMEC624 Science & Maths Education Evaluation Issues is equivalent to EDMS502 Science Technology Engineering & Mathematics Instructional Design & Evaluation

  • Unit substitutions can also be utilised where required, to ensure that all students are able to complete the award.
  • It is expected that all remaining students will have successfully completed requirements of the course by the end of Study Period 3, 2018 in order to graduate from the Master of Science (Science and Mathematics Education) through OUA.
  • The final date that students will be able to apply for graduation to receive this award is the 4th of January 2019.
