Start for Success is designed to give students the best possible start to their online tertiary studies through practical study advice and guidance, and a range of effective online learning strategies and resources. 

This unit is continuously available from the date of enrolment to the end of the academic year so as to meet your ongoing study needs.

This unit has no minimum requirement of study time per week.

Please note: There is no additional login or password required, but there is a 24 hour processing period before students are able to access the unit via My Study Centre and clicking on My Current Units.

At the completion of this unit, it is expected that students will:

  1. Understand the role of student (rights and responsibilities)
  2. Develop time management strategies
  3. Develop achievable actions to support their studies
  4. Engage meta-cognitive reflection to better understand their learning style/preferences, talents, levels and needs
  5. Use tests and tasks to better understand their learning styles/preferences, capability, levels and needs
  6. Know what it means to be a self-directed learner in a higher education context
  7. Understand the higher education context, including the online method of instruction that prevails in English medium universities; understand notions of academic integrity and academic rigor
  8. Understand what is required to communicate competently in an English medium academic environment; understand the variety of communication platforms/channels available to them
  9. Understand the importance of working collaboratively with lecturers, peers and support staff
  10. Understand the expectations and challenges of e-learning (online study); understand basic navigation of a learning management system
  11. Know where to locate important OUA and other study skills resources that contribute to a student's study toolkit; know about OUA's student success student support services and how to engage them
  12. Understand what is required for 'success' at first year level university study and how this understanding dovetails with their personal expectations and notions of achievement
