In this unit, you will investigate principles of design management and practice in relation to key stages in the design process, together with quality control strategies in the context of local, national and global industry settings for effective design outcomes.

You will examine principles and approaches that inform professional practice and outcomes in design, such as competitor analysis, design auditing, project and studio management, professional ethics and intellectual property law.

Upon successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  • Identify and assess the personnel roles and skills required within the design studio or design business.
  • Debate design management issues relevant to end product and delivery within local, national and global markets.
  • Analyse the stages within the design process and critically evaluate their interrelationships with design management principles, planning models and design project co-ordination.
  • Interpret quality systems issues and strategically plan quality processes to achieve effective design outcomes.
  • Identify and evaluate opportunities to develop competitive and sustainable design strategies for a global market.

In this unit you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

  • Critically reflect on your own work to demonstrate autonomy, good judgment and ethical responsibility.
  • Undertake research into contemporary media and communication theory and practice to explore possible industry and career directions.
