This unit introduces you to four classic Australian novels (one of them a trilogy), providing some thematic, formal and stylistic analysis, situating each novel in its historical context and reflecting on the history of their reception in Australia and elsewhere.

At the completion of this unit students will be able to:

  1. write clear and cogent literary criticism
  2. understand and think through complex ethical questions
  3. successfully undertake literary-historical research
  4. speak with some authority about the Australian literary tradition
  5. write and orally communicate effectively
  6. engage in intellectual reasoning at an improved level.
