Architect and Landscape Architect

Architects and Landscape Architects design, plan and manage a wide variety of buildings and landscape areas for commercial, industrial, recreational or residential uses. They must have knowledge of spatial areas and uses as well construction factors influencing layout and design.

Duties and tasks

  • Create design blueprints, drawings and material options for clients to review, indicating external factors such as soil types and other developments in the area
  • Create design options based on intended function of the space and key factors influencing clients needs and expectations
  • Hire or recommend labourer's or contract companies to implement design; oversee progress of work to ensure it meets design objectives and specifications
  • Offer estimated budget for design, materials and labour work needed for project as well as estimated construction time
  • Research and analyse data regarding geographical and ecological features of land, soil, vegetation and rainfall of area to determine appropriate land use and recommendations
  • Research spatial layouts, current costs of materials and construction and emerging practices for spatial designs and functions
  • Work with clients to design building or landscape of area that meets size requirements, budget and aesthetic desires appropriate for area and intended use

Working conditions

Architects and Landscape Architects typically work a Monday to Friday work week but may be required to work evenings or weekends to meet deadlines, work with clients or oversee construction progress. They may work in an office setting, workshop, or in the field surveying land and construction areas and projects.
