Social Worker

Social Workers provide a key function in society as they work to help families, individuals as well as groups address a range of problems. In this capacity, they work to help address social problems and human rights issues. They may be called upon to help very diverse groups of people in a variety of ways. The goal is always to improve the situation of those in need of assistance.

Duties and tasks

  • Acting as mediators to help resolve conflicts within communities
  • Assisting individuals find the right community services for their particular needs. This may include healthcare, housing services, employment services and more.
  • Engaging in cooperative efforts with different social agencies to help clients
  • Evaluating those in need in order to direct them to the appropriate services
  • Filing reports and maintaining records of client progress
  • Helping those in need use available community services
  • Interviewing clients to determine their exact level of need and where best to direct them

Working conditions

Social Workers find themselves working in many different locations, which can include schools, nursing homes, substance abuse clinics, hospitals as well as mental health facilities and other locations. Since social workers work in various settings, the work environments can vary considerably.
