This intermediate unit introduces students to the main issues of occupational health, safety and environment. Themes and inter-relationships are explored using safety, health or environment case studies, including DDT, Asbestos, Bhopal, Piper Alpha, Exxon Valdez, melanoma and & workplace cancer. OHSE as an integrated concept will be discussed as well as a model of occupational health, safety and environmental management is proposed.

At the completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. understand occupational health concepts and language sufficient to be able to communicate effectively with occupational health and safety professionals
  2. understand environmental management concepts and language sufficient to be able to communicate effectively with environmental management professionals
  3. assess impacts of adverse effects on health and environment within organisations
  4. understand the inter-relationships of adverse effects and impacts to health and environment with the interaction of the workplace, work systems, environment and people
  5. through study of failures and inadequacies, understand how OHSE risks to health or environment in organisations can be controlled
  6. develop a model of OHSE management
  7. analyse issues of OHSE that are of relevance to the students' background or work experience.
