The Associate Degree in Applied Business (Business Improvement) is for future leaders and managers who want to learn the knowledge and skills required to make it in the modern business world. Whether you’re an aspiring entrepreneur or an assistant manager looking to step up to the next level, this program is a great stepping stone to a new or accelerated career.The program combines core business subjects covering areas such as management, finance, marketing, human resources, project management, entrepreneurial and innovative thinking, and business planning with a choice of streams and electives in students’ areas of interest. The program content has been developed in consultation with industry experts and they are actively involved in its delivery.The first year serves as a foundation year, where you will learn the skills to apply your new business knowledge to a range of situations. In this subject, you will identify skill sets and knowledge required to work in a chosen industry and evaluate your own skills, attributes and learning goals to work in your chosen industry. Through case studies, workshops, online materials and tutorials, you will gain insight into your chosen industry and identify challenges and opportunities of a rapidly changing world. You will explore the operational and external environment of your industry, and how your industry intersects with other industries. You will also investigate the importance of planning and strategy development in managing a business. This subject also incorporates learning through practice by exposing you to authentic learning experiences. These experiences are placed at the centre of learning and assessment, for you to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours necessary to respond to industry, community and/or global needs.You will be introduced to:- a range of methods, tools, techniques and approaches to practice- principles and perspectives such as values, ethics, empathy and leadership in real world scenarios- reflection and deliberative thinking as a means of developing knowledge, skills, attitudes and aspirations- ways of understanding problems and developing solutions through active inquiry

This capstone subject will provide opportunities for you to bring together the knowledge learned, and skills developed through your course of study and apply these to entrepreneurial and innovative contexts. This subject creates a practical awareness of the concepts of entrepreneurship, social entrepreneurship, intrapreneurship and innovation as a means to create opportunities for new ventures and better solutions to current problems. The subject encourages students to think creatively, and approach opportunities and issues from a fresh point of view.In conjunction with the discipline theory, this subject builds on concepts of learning through practice in Year 1 of study by introducing you to more complex learning experiences.You will be introduced to:• discipline-based skills and knowledge in dynamic practice situations. This will include authentic and purposeful, industry-related experiences• concepts of managing effective relationships and communicating with others• the development and use of adaptive leadership skills and how these skills relate to innovative and entrepreneurial practice• the nature of responsible, accountable and reflective workplace skills, and creative and critical thinking relevant to para-professional practice.You will exercise self-awareness, initiative and judgement to manage yourself and professional relationships effectively. The application of tacit knowledge and capabilities will be reflected in a Practice Manual.

This subject focuses on the principles and tools associated with contemporary Lean Thinking and practice. Lean Thinking or ‘lean’ is a systematic method of continuous improvement through minimising waste without sacrificing productivity, creating more value for customers. It has been identified and applied by many organisations as a key strategy to organise human and production activities to deliver more benefits to the organisation and the customer. It does this by eliminating waste, creating knowledge, respecting people, building in quality, visualising practices, and managing workflow. Activities and assessment tasks in this subject will focus on identifying and analysing lean tools, applying them in practice, and assessing their contribution to continuous improvement and excellence in an organisation.In conjunction with the discipline theory, this subject introduces learning through practice by exposing you to authentic learning experiences. This subject introduces you to effective professional communication techniques and practices applicable to the workplace and study. You will learn about the foundations of communication, the various communication styles, professional etiquette, and different types of communication behaviours. A central focus of this subject is for you to understand your own style, and gain an awareness of how you communicate and how others might feel based on how you behave and interact. In addition, you will explore a range of barriers and enablers to effective communication, and develop strategies such as active listening, conflict resolution, and giving and receiving feedback. You will practice, and be assessed on, effective communication in groups and in a simulated environment. This will include participation in role plays, interviewing others, presenting ideas, and completing various group and individual activities.In conjunction with the discipline theory, this subject introduces learning through practice by exposing you to authentic learning experiences. Students can develop the fundamental written and verbal communication skills necessary for effective communication in both business careers and academic studies in this subject. As such, the focus of it is two-fold; firstly, developing your personal communication skills and secondly also giving you a better understanding of the significant role of international business communication in the workplace.
