This subject was previously known as Statistics for Social Research.This subject provides a solid introduction to applied statistics for students in criminal justice and related fields. The subject covers both descriptive and inferential statistics, and students learn to use Microsoft Excel for statistical analysis.Students in this subject will be taught to identify when certain statistical techniques are appropriate, and how to perform, interpret and present these analyses. This will enable students to be more discerning consumers of the research literature and also prepare them to carry out their own research projects. Students will be taught to analyse data using Microsoft Excel. These skills are highly sought after by employers.Students should not enrol in this subject if they have completed 1003PSY Research Methods and Statistics and 2009CCJ / CCJ29 Statistics for Social Research.

This subject was previously known as SOCX830 Doing Social Survey Research.This is a subject in applied survey research and data analysis. It will explain key survey techniques used and give you the chance to try them out in practice. The unit covers choosing survey methods, administering surveys and writing good survey questions. It also looks at some of the debates around the potentials and limits of surveys. Qualitative researchers often rely on surveys to prepare themselves for fieldwork or to &#39;triangulate&#39; their results from interview work. But ultimately, surveys are designed to enable statistical analysis of data, and therefore the unit covers some of the statistical techniques used. Social research is essential in the contemporary world and an important field of employment for graduates in the social sciences and humanities. This unit gives students an opportunity to develop practical skills designing social and organisational research; and in collecting, analysing and presenting data to address research questions. You will consider the best research methods to use and the problems, limitations and traps likely to be encountered by inexperienced researchers. You will also consider the ethical issues in social research, and the impact of new information technologies on social research. A major emphasis in the unit is on the practice of social research. A series of task-based activities introduces major methodological techniques, basic qualitative and quantitative approaches, including interviewing, focus groups, textual analysis, and participant observation. Students also receive a basic introduction to SPSS. Research methods useful to community generated research are also explored. No knowledge of statistics is required
