About this subject

  • At the completion of this subject students will be able to:

    1. Use sociological theories and concepts to critically analyse modern consumption with attention to a historical, economic, cultural and social context
    2. Explain from an intersectional perspective how individual identities and actions are interrelated to gender, racial and other inequalities and hierarchies at the local and global levels
    3. Learn to make a persuasive, reasoned argument based on research, critical thinking and a synthesis of scholarly and non-scholarly ideas; Develop research skills to analyse an existing social justice initiative and respond to a real-life problem of ethics such as gender/race discrimination and global inequality
    4. Advocate for social justice causes and propose practical solutions to inequalities by effectively communicating to specialist and layperson audiences in written and oral forms
    5. Communicate and develop ideas individually and collectively through active listening and speaking, personal reflection, and constructive debates with peers from diverse backgrounds
    6. Build on and apply new knowledge and skills to future academic and professional development, both as an independent learner and an effective team member

    Students who have an Academic Standing of Suspension or Exclusion under Macquarie University's Academic Progression Policy are not permitted to enrol in OUA units offered by Macquarie University. Students with an Academic Standing of Suspension or Exclusion who have enrolled in units through OUA will be withdrawn.
