About this subject
At the completion of this subject students will be able to:
- use a variety of appropriate resources to give an account of the religious and socio-historical context of the selected Gospel
- identify and describe key narrative themes and characteristics within the text
- identify the various reading commsubjecties represented in the text
- explain the way narrative themes convey the theological aims discernible in the text
- use the skills of historical-critical, narrative, and social-scientific critical exegesis to present a study of selected texts.
- A survey of the history of the first century Mediterranean world with an emphasis on the religious & social conditions informing the synoptic gospels
- A detailed study of either Matthew or Luke, drawing on historical, narrative, and/or social-scientific methodologies
- A study of the distinguishing stylistic and theological characteristics of the selected gospel
This subject provides students with the opportunity for study of either the Gospel of Matthew or the Gospel of Luke. The subject will examine the social, religious and historical contexts, the literary genre and narrative construction of the Gospel and its theological interpretation of Jesus' life, death and resurrection.
