The Bachelor of Education (Primary) has been designed for people seeking to attain an Initial Teacher Education qualification in order to register as a teacher in Australia and any other countries that recognise an Australian teaching qualification. Specifically, this degree provides a qualification for those intending to teach children at the primary level of education.Students will develop advanced critical skills, knowledge and understanding concerning best practice in education and in meeting the needs of children. Students will have four opportunities to engage in professional experience in schools, culminating in a final professional placement of a block one full school term.Subject content includes digital literacy, planning lessons, assessment, classroom management and understanding diverse student needs.Please note that this course is only available to applicants who are residing in Australia for the duration of their degree. Bachelor of Education (Primary and Secondary)

The Undergraduate Certificate in Teaching Education Studies is designed for people who are interested in pursuing a career in early childhood or primary education and gives the student entry (and credit for the four subjects completed) into the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) or (Primary) degree at Curtin. This course is designed for people seeking to attain an Initial Teacher Education qualification in order to register as a teacher in Western Australia. Students will develop advanced critical skills, knowledge and understanding concerning best practice in education and in meeting the needs of 21st century learners. The course provides a grounding in theoretical and practical aspects of teaching and offers 45 days of professional experience in schools. Students who complete the requirements for the Graduate Diploma in Education in Primary are able to articulate into the Master of Teaching program.The Graduate Diploma in Education (Primary) will be chosen by those who wish to teach in Years 1 - 6 in Primary Schools and will provide a foundation for teaching across the primary curriculum. This subject is one of three undergraduate Option subjects in integrated science, technology, engineering and mathematics (iSTEM) offered by the School of Education. Completing all three subjects will provide a specialisation in iSTEM. This subject aims to equip students with content and pedagogical content knowledge in integrated STEM education in the context of an inquiry based approach. Students will develop, create and reflect upon a contextual problem, make explicit links to the science, mathematics and technologies curricula and 21st century learning skills. Pedagogical content knowledge will be developed by students creating and evaluating project plans and implementation approaches in a variety of educational settings as appropriate to their degree (ie ECE, Primary or Secondary).

iSTEM: Social Issues

This subject is one of a set of 3 undergraduate option units to prepare Initial Teacher Educators (ITE) to specialise in teaching literacy and English. This subject introduces a range of literary texts applicable to students from Foundation to Year 10, including: short stories, novels, poetry, prose, plays, film and multimodal texts, in spoken, print and digital online form. The subject explores how texts reflect the historical and socio-cultural context of their creation and how different readers respond to them through the lenses of their own personal and socio-cultural context. The text–to-life and life-to-text significance of literature will be explored. In addition to the analysis of linguistic, literary and multimodal devices available to authors, students will investigate how these devices are applied in the process of textual creation. A diverse range of texts, valued for their aesthetic, social and cultural significance, will be at the heart of the subject and will include literature spanning from Australia (including the oral traditions and written texts of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders); Asia and the world, as well as sustainability. The subject will explore the dynamic, constantly evolving and polysemic nature of genres of literature.
The expectation is that students will have completed two mandatory (non-option) subjects in English/Literacy before taking this subject.
