This course is dedicated to producing quality graduates ready to take up employment across the early childhood education sector, including teaching children aged 0-3 years, pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, pre-primary and years 1-3 in a primary school. Dealing specifically with children aged 0-8 years, Early Childhood Studies focuses on the care and education of children in this age group in partnership with families and communities. A variety of flexible admission options is available to suit applicants with different needs, all of which are required to demonstrate competency in literacy and numeracy, as teachers require these skills to support the development of students. The course also includes the opportunity to complete a fast tracked final year and achieve eligibility for employment in schools from term 4 of that year. A key feature of this course is the equal emphasis given to both the theoretical groundings of early childhood education and the practical application of knowledge and skills in a wide range of early childhood settings. A coordinated program of professional practice experiences at key points throughout the course allow students to make the connection between theory and practice, while building both professional and generic employability skills in real care and education environments. In addition, students have the opportunity to tailor their learning experience by specialising in curriculum areas of particular interest.

Meet children’s educational needs in kinder, pre-primary school, and childcare settings. This nationally accredited teaching degree includes the opportunity to pick up a specialisation during Year 4, including Catholic Studies and Special Education.

Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Studies)

This is the third in the suite of professional experience subjects and includes both a theory and a practical component (a placement in a school). This subject focuses on assessing, providing feedback and reporting on student learning. It encompasses the principles and purpose of effective assessment through the analysis and critique of different learning theories. The professional experience practical assessment is a 4 week full-time block placement intended to enable practical application of the knowledge and skills gained along with providing further insights into the complexity of the teacher’s role. All required clearances to work with children must be obtained and valid, and all other professional experience requirements met. Primary Professional Experience 3: Evaluating Learning

This subject was previously known as EDC231 Teaching Language and Literacy in Junior Primary.
This subject engages students by developing their knowledge base of language, literacy and literature in the Junior Primary phase of schooling. It expands on this knowledge by encouraging critical analysis of key theories and practices in the teaching of English to diverse groups, culminating in the ability to design purposeful learning opportunities.

Learn the skills, conventions and processes for teaching English to children. You’ll explore current theories in English teaching, learn the key elements for early reading and writing, and see the importance of Children’s Literature.

Teaching Language, Literacy and Literature in Junior Primary

This is the second in the suite of professional experience subjects and includes both a theory and a practical component (a placement in a school). This subject positions the educator within relationships and networks with a range of stakeholders. It focuses on the educator’s role in creating, leading and maintaining a positive learning framework; being accountable for creating safe, supportive learning environments for diverse groups of learners; and communicating effectively with stakeholders. Emphasis is placed on proactive teacher behaviour aimed at motivating and engaging all learners while meeting individual student needs, and supporting their wellbeing and developing agency. The subject will examine theories, policies and practices relating to classroom management and stewardship that includes managing challenging situations. The professional experience practical assessment is a 3 week full-time block placement intended to enable practical application of the knowledge and skills gained, along with providing further insights into the complexity of the teacher’s role. All required clearances to work with children must be obtained and valid, along with completing the mandatory reporting training, and meeting all other professional experience requirements. Primary Professional Experience 2: Leadership and Stewardship for Diverse Learners

This subject examines social, cultural, linguistic, and economic forces which impact on classroom practices and student learning outcomes. The subject requires analysis of the characteristics of classrooms and schools that reduce the effects of inequalities through curriculum choices and pedagogical practices. This subject emphasises the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers associated with student linguistic, cultural, religious and socioeconomic diversity including consideration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in primary school classrooms.

Cultural Contexts in Primary Education

This unit builds on the work covered in the Introduction to the International Baccalaureate Programme unit. It provides an overview to the key theories and principles relating to the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme. Quality teaching, informed by the best available evidence, helps children develop their number sense from the early years of schooling. To effectively educate students as they navigate numeracy in primary school, teachers need to be able to demonstrate personal content knowledge of the three strands of mathematics content in the NSW syllabus: Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. Studying this subject, you will become familiar with the content of the mathematics taught in primary school. This subject will encourage you to recognise and analyse the developmental nature of mathematics.

Get up to speed with basic maths so that you can teach it to primary school students. You’ll cover algebra, geometry, and probability. Find out about teaching tools and strategies for numeracy.

This subject builds on the knowledge of pedagogies appropriate for teaching primary mathematics that students acquired in EMT521 Teaching Primary Mathematics 1. The second subject in the sequence, EMT620 broadens students understanding of mathematics pedagogy by addressing the content and practices not covered in the initial subject. This subject will model and provide opportunities for students to engage with best pedagogical practice by undertaking rich tasks, group work, and problem solving, as well as differentiating and integrating the curriculum. Students will enhance their understanding of appropriate pedagogies for teaching mathematics and their knowledge of relevant curricula, the development of students&#39; thinking in each of the strands of the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics, and the relationship of content knowledge to pedagogy. It will provide pre-service teachers with opportunities to assess primary students&#39; mathematical thinking using work samples and to develop their skills in planning for teaching based on this information.

Teaching Primary Mathematics 2

Internship/PlacementThe second Professional Experience (PE2) provides pre-service teachers the opportunity to become familiar with the school context. PE2 primarily involves active observation, discussions with the supervising teacher and initial school experiences. Throughout the placement pre-service teachers are required to maintain professional files, which contain observations, policy documents, teaching resources and personal reflections on their own experience. Professional Experience 2 (Primary)

Enhance your skills for teaching humanities and social sciences as a primary school educator. By undertaking this subject, you will focus on pedagogy and the NSW K-6 History and Geography syllabuses. You will learn how to plan and execute learning sequences and how to identify and access appropriate resources which support student learning in the primary years. This subject emphasises student-centred teaching strategies, aimed at integrating academic knowledge with problem solving, understanding, practical skills and values outcomes. You will explore how literacy, numeracy and ICT skills are relevant to the teaching and learning of humanities and social sciences.

Primary School Society and Environment Teaching

Studying this subject will equip you with the knowledge and skills to confidently and creatively design science and technology lessons and programs.   You will learn to integrate the NSW K-6 science and technology syllabus with other learning areas, including literacy, to provide an integrated learning experience for students. You will also develop your understanding of the scope and sequence of the K-6 science and technology syllabus.  You will explore a range of pedagogies that apply to science and technology teaching, as well as teaching resources, including ICT, to engage students in their learning.  Putting your skills into practice, you will design and trial hands-on science experiences and technology briefs for children.  You will also deepen your understanding of assessment strategies that improve science and technology teaching and learning.
