Cooks are required to perform the tasks of preparing, seasoning, tenderizing and cooking meats, seafood, vegetables and other food products. They work in a variety of venues including family style restaurants, specialised banquet facilities and catering companies. Cooks provide an important service to the people in the community as well as visitors to the area.

Duties and tasks

  • Ensure oven, grills and ranges have accurate temperatures
  • Ensure portion sizes are correct
  • Follow recipes
  • Inspect food products for quality assurance
  • Keep foods at the appropriate temperatures
  • Keep kitchen clean and sanitary
  • Marinade and season foods appropriately
  • Plan menus
  • Plate food for eye appeal
  • Prepare all food for cooking
  • Prepare special dietary foods when necessary

Working conditions

Cooks work in fast paced and high stress environments. Food must be cooked quickly and thoroughly even though customers do not want to wait which can cause added tension. The kitchen can be hot and uncomfortable, but the gratification when customers comment on the delicious food is wonderful.
