About this subject
Students who successfully complete this subject will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of non-Western traditions on contemporary non-Western societies;
- Use the concept of ‘multiple modernities’ to critically differentiate between and evaluate current understandings of globalisation;
- Identify and analyse the diversity of social, cultural and political dynamics transforming the contemporary world;
- Identify and analyse the modern components of religious fundamentalisms.

- Case studies eg Japan, China, India, Islamic Societies, The US and the West
Abandoning Eurocentric perspectives, this subject draws on experiences and perspectives from the ‘periphery’ to analyse global social dynamics. Delving into the past, we identify diverse cultural legacies shaping the present and the future. We ask: Is modernisation the same thing as Westernisation? How thoroughgoing is individualism in the new China, and what can we learn from Chinese environmentalists? Is religious fundamentalism an attempt to return to the past? What has Islamic State got to do with modernity? How can we explain attitudes to gun control and health insurance in the US?

Single subject FAQs
Single subjects are the individual components that make up a degree. With Open Universities Australia, you’re able to study many of them as stand-alone subjects, including postgraduate single subjects, without having to commit to a degree.
Each of your subjects will be held over the course of a study term, and they’ll usually require 10 to 12 hours of study each week. Subjects are identified by a title and a code, for example, Developmental Psychology, PSY20007.

If that degree allows entry via undergraduate subjects, there will be information about this under the Entry Requirements section. You will find a list of 2-4 open enrolment subjects you need to successfully complete to qualify for admission into that qualification.
Once you pass those subjects, you will satisfy the academic requirements for the degree, and you can apply for entry.
