About this subject
At the completion of this subject students will be able to:
- demonstrate increased personal numeracy skills in mathematical relationships, expressions, and applications of the content of the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics
- develop a personal approach for teaching mathematics that demonstrates knowledge of curriculum and which is based on constructivist teaching and assessment strategies
- appraise strategies and resources for differentiating teaching to cater for a wide range of mathematical learners
- critique pedagogies for effective teaching of mathematics
- plan for teaching using a range of strategies, technologies and resources.
- Comparing teaching styles. Big Idea thinking. Setting up the Child Study
- Big Idea Planning. Connecting mathematics across strands. A developmental curriculum
- Effective teaching and assessment; Making effective task choices; Using evidence; Knowing the developmental nature of key concepts etc
- Making effective computational choices; Mental computation strategies; Teaching number facts

- Teaching with textbooks; Modifying textbook content; Choosing appropriate texts and uses for them
- Teaching with websites and electronic resources; Issues and constraints; Choosing appropriate websites; tasks and uses for them
This subject focuses on the development of a range of effective pedagogies with particular emphasis on the Proficiency Strands of the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics. Students will continue to develop a deep understanding of the Number and Algebra strand of the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics. Topics include effective teaching and assessment of primary mathematics, and planning with a focus on the ‘big ideas’ of mathematics. Curriculum content focuses on understanding operations, computational choices, and algebra and number patterns. As well, there is a focus on strategies for working in a differentiated learning environment, including the use of tasks that accommodate diversity, with a particular focus on Indigenous learners and catering to their specific learning needs.
