The Bachelor of Social Work is an entry-level, professionally accredited qualification to practise as a social worker. Rehabilitation Counselling

In this subject, you will be introduced to major concepts and theories in rehabilitation and health intervention. This subject will examine procedures that are useful in rehabilitation when working in health settings. The subject will provide students with an understanding of effective case management skills which leads to proper care coordination, seamless service provider integration and cooperation, and the development and delivery of comprehensive rehabilitation services to those living with chronic conditions or permanent impairments with the aim of achieving optimal health.

In this subject, you are given the opportunity to increase your knowledge, understanding, and skills in communicating in interpersonal and group settings. The principal aim of this subject is to identify the existing interpersonal skills of students. In addition, it provides an opportunity to develop and practice these skills which are essential when working in health settings. Given that the subject adopts a skills-based orientation, students will be required to attend one weekly 2-hour workshop which will provide the opportunity to practice effective communication styles, appreciate contextual considerations (e.g., culture), and develop an understanding of the application of interpersonal communication skills in a range of settings (e.g., therapeutic, social, and public health).

Sports scientists and strength and conditioning coaches working with high performance athletes require the ability to prescribe and deliver safe and effective exercise programs with an evidence-based, best practice approach, to meet specific performance goals. This unit develops an in-depth understanding of the theoretical concepts and practical application of capacity assessment and program design as they relate to high performance athletes. Specifically, the aim of this unit is to develop students&#39; knowledge and skills relating to the use of contemporary methods of field and laboratory based testing in a number of areas including aerobic/anaerobic capacity, repeated sprint ability, and strength and power. In addition, this unit will explore innovative practices in training program design across the spectrum of capacities required for performance in various athletic events.

Strength and Conditioning for Performance and Rehabilitation

This course aims to introduce a range of environmental factors, which may pose a risk to the health of human populations. It also addresses risk assessment and management methods for evaluating and controlling such risks. A variety of diseases associated with exposure to common occupational and environmental factors will be discussed. In addition, there will be an overview of the historical, legislative and administrative aspects of occupational health.

Communication Skills for the Workplace is a language proficiency support subject designed to develop students’ communication skills in preparation for the Australian and global workplace. Examples of these language skills include vocabulary development, sentence structure, pronunciation and fluency. The subject also aims to develop soft skills that are highly valued in the workplace, such as active listening, teamwork and day-to-day communication skills. This subject also places emphasis on developing an awareness of Australian and global workplace cultures and etiquette. The subject is highly practical in nature. Students will be required to actively participate in all sessions, and assessment tasks require students to engage with each other and their teachers.

This subject was previously known as Writing and Research for Professional Contexts.This subject is designed to introduce students to a range of writing and research tasks common to workplaces in both the public and private sectors. It covers the production of workplace documents (including speeches, briefing notes, website material, media releases and corporate communications) as well as a curriculum vitae and responses to selection criteria. Advanced Workplace Writing

This subject will develop students’ theoretical and practical understanding of the recognition, evaluation and management of occupational hygiene and related safety hazards. Workplace contaminants and stressors and their evaluation: gases, vapours, dusts, heat and noise will form the focal points for investigation and analysis. This subject further covers preliminary survey, selection of instruments and analytical methods; a field survey: interpretation and use of results as well as instrumentation and techniques. Other areas of this subject include application of monitoring, control strategies, statistics, material safety data sheets and strategy of safety design.
