This unit introduces fundamental concepts in discrete mathematics that are essential in computer science and information technology. Topics include: an introduction to logic; the structure and applications of graphs and trees; algebraic structures and their applications to languages and to the operation of error-detecting and error-correcting codes. You will explore the theory and techniques of logic, graphs and trees, algebraic systems, solve a variety of discrete mathematical problems, communicate mathematical ideas and make effective use of appropriate technology.

At the completion of this unit students will be able to:

  1. Understand the theory and techniques of logic, graphs and trees, and algebraic systems
  2. Apply the knowledge and skills obtained to investigate and solve a variety of discrete mathematical problems
  3. Communicate mathematical ideas
  4. Make effective use of appropriate technology.
