This for-credit unit is a preparatory mathematics unit intended for students who have not completed secondary school mathematics and who have insufficient background for the more advanced mathematics required for success in MAS120 and MAS130. The topics covered include algebra; polynomials, exponential and logarithmic functions and their graphs; matrices; basic concepts of differential and integral calculus and applications.

At the completion of this unit students will be able to:

1. perform basic algebra including rational expressions and exponents
2. work with systems of linear equations and matrices
3. work with inequalities, absolute value
4. use and graph functions in Cartesian plane
5. work with trigonometric functions and radians
6. calculate simple limits and finite and infinite points
7. calculate derivatives of powers, exponential and logarithmic functions
8. use product, quotient and chain rules
9. solve simple optimisation problems involving differentiation.
• Assignments — x 5 (30%)
• Invigilated Exam (70%)

Mathematics up to year 10 in Australian high schools provides sufficient background.

This unit addresses the following topics.

NumberTopic
1Straight lines and linear functions
2Systems of linear equations and matrices
3Precalculus review
4Functions: their graphs and limits
5Trigonometric functions
6Slopes of curves and derivatives
7More on derivatives
8Exponential and logarithmic functions
9Higher order derivatives and applications

This unit is delivered using the following methods and materials:

This unit is not currently a requirement for any courses, but may be eligible for credit.

1. Many undergraduate courses on offer through OUA include 'open elective' where any OUA unit can be credited to the course. You need to check the Award Requirements on the course page for the number of allowed open electives and any level limitations.
2. In other cases, the content of this unit might be relevant to a course on offer through OUA or elsewhere. In order to receive credit for this unit in the course you will need to supply the provider institution with a copy of the Unit Profile in the approved format, which you can download here. Note that the Unit Profile is set at the start of the year, and if textbooks change this may not match the Co-Op textbook list.

Textbooks are subject to change within the academic year. Students are advised to purchase their books no earlier than one to two months before the start of a unit.
