The ideas and techniques considered in this unit are basic to many applications of mathematics in engineering and in the biological, physical and social sciences. Mastery of these ideas and techniques at this stage will greatly help later on with an understanding of these disciplines where they are used. They also form a background prerequisite for the units MAS130 : Calculus and Matrix Algebra.

You are also strongly advised NOT to enrol in MAS120 and MAS110 at the same time. In order to successfully complete MAS120, you will require the knowledge gained from the successful completion of MAS110.

Murdoch University advises that students who do not successfully complete MAS110 before attempting MAS120 usually fail MAS120.

At the completion of this unit students will be able to:

  1. calculate limits and finite and infinite points
  2. differentiate powers, exponentials, logs and trigonometric functions
  3. integrate powers, exponentials, logs and trigonometric functions
  4. use the product, quotient and chain rules
  5. use substitution and integration by parts
  6. solve separable and linear first order ODEs
  7. solve optimisation problems using calculus
  8. use linear approximations and related rates
  9. do basic algebra including exponential functions with complex numbers in Cartesian and polar form.
  • Assignments — x 4 (30%)
  • Invigilated Exam (70%)

This unit may be eligible for credit towards other courses:

  1. Many undergraduate courses on offer through OUA include 'open elective' where any OUA unit can be credited to the course. You need to check the Award Requirements on the course page for the number of allowed open electives and any level limitations.
  2. In other cases, the content of this unit might be relevant to a course on offer through OUA or elsewhere. In order to receive credit for this unit in the course you will need to supply the provider institution with a copy of the Unit Profile in the approved format, which you can download here. Note that the Unit Profile is set at the start of the year, and if textbooks change this may not match the Co-Op textbook list.

Textbook information for this unit is currently being updated and will be available soon. Please check back regularly for updates. Alternatively, visit the The Co-op website and enter the unit details to search for available textbooks.
