This unit introduces the pedagogical, curricula, evaluative and theoretical possibilities for schooling in the middle years. It endeavours to place the complexity of learning, learners and the social space of the classroom within the dominant schooling framework of primary and secondary schooling as well as the philosophical, political and practical implications for middle schooling. A focus on developing appropriate approaches to pedagogy, curriculum and assessment for effective teaching and learning of these 'millennial' young people will be used together with understandings of 'new times' as the basis for this thinking.

At the completion of this unit students will be able to:

  1. demonstrate an appreciation of the issues associated with young people with regards to their bodies, health, physicality, personal development, creativity, expression, literacy and numeracy
  2. demonstrate an understanding of the principals and practices of pedagogy, curriculum and assessment in the middle years schooling
  3. develop teaching and learning strategies and practices relevant to young people in the middle years schooling.
  4. demonstrate an awareness of diversity in learners within the same social space and develop practices that identify and engage with this diversity for collective outcomes
  5. articulate the socio-political dimensions of traditional mass schooling, in particular related to upper primary and lower secondary schools, and contrast these to those of middle schooling
  6. identify a personal middle schooling philosophy.
