Whether you work as an administrative assistant, a communication officer, a low-level manager or as the Chief Executive Officer, to operate efficiently you need well developed communication skills. This unit investigates the connections between clear communication and effective leadership and management.

You will explore the theoretical models that underpin contemporary communication processes and the different communication structures and styles that exist in modern business organisations. By interrogating concepts such as interpersonal communication, emotional intelligence, diversity and team dynamics you develop a clearer awareness of your own communication strengths and weaknesses and an understanding of how those around you communicate. Through practical exercises and assessment you will learn how to identify and map the communication structure and networks that exist in workplaces and how to improve your own written and oral communication skills.

At the completion of this unit students will:

  1. understand the central role of communications within a business organisation
  2. understand key elements of verbal and non-verbal communication
  3. understand personal strengths and weaknesses in different communications settings
  4. have developed report writing skills
  5. have developed a basic understanding of cross-cultural communication
  6. be able to identify different styles of leadership and communication strategies within a business organisation.
