Bricklayer and Stonemason

Bricklayers and Stonemasons cut and bind various types of masonry building bricks and blocks in mortar to build foundations, mend walls and construct other structures such as partitions and arches.

Duties and tasks

  • Adhere to strict occupational health and safety guidelines
  • Apply layers of mortar as a base and binder for bricks and remove surplus using a trowel
  • Construct scaffolding as per state or site based requirements
  • Ensure alignment is level and accurate
  • Fix clay bricks, cement bricks and other structures as necessary
  • Read and follow plans and work according to specific job requirements
  • Secure foundations using moisture-resistant materials
  • Shape and embellish bricks to create decorative brickwork
  • Use a range of tools and equipment to pre-cut stone and concrete blocks

Working conditions

Bricklayers and Stonemasons typically work Monday to Friday with some overtime on weekends. They work outdoors and may be required to work at heights, in confined spaces and in difficult weather conditions.
