About this subject
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Evaluate the theory and principles of managing health data and clinical documentation systems
- Compare and contrast the practice of, standards promoting and governance arrangements for health data and clinical documentation management
- Analyse health data and information systems to evaluate the performance of a health program or service
- Articulate the ethical, legal and political issues in health data and documentation improvement
- Module 1: Introduction to health data and informatics
- Module 2: Data basics
- Module 3: Data analysis and interpretation
- Module 4: Standards, governance and policy
- Module 5: Data mining, linkage and big data
- Module 6: Disaster and contingency planning
Theories and approaches to health data management, information analysis and service improvements are reviewed to provide a foundation for enhanced organisational information management. Issues and key challenges addressed include ethics, legal and security requirements for managers and professionals, to enable improvements in database management and clinical documentation. Frameworks and models for information analysis and reporting will be investigated, including strategies for measuring and monitoring organisational and clinical outcomes and experiences. The challenge of seeking to meet diverse outcomes, as necessary in value-based care and the quadruple bottom aim, and how they interact with each other, will be explored. Students will have opportunities to hear from experts across Australia and participate in industry case studies and analysis.
