Principles of Geospatial Science
About this subject
At the completion of this subject students will be able to:
- develop reading and interpretation of a range of local, national and global maps and be familiar with key concepts such as scale, latitude and longitude, map projections, vertical and horizontal datums and coordinates
- examine the basics of surveying, cartography, remote sensing and GIS to recognise their practical applications and limitations particularly in relation to an appreciation of accuracy and precision and the relationship between engineering design and survey measurement
- work in a team environment to assemble and present information on surveying methodologies and their application within an engineering context
- perform an elementary GIS analysis within a civil engineering setting, communicate a solution through a map and written format and then critically reflect upon the process to further professional development.

The subject provides a practical background to the use of geographic information systems and basic surveying in the practice of civil engineering. Geographic Information Systems are used in an enormous range of applications where there is geographic data to be stored, queried, analysed and displayed.
The subject incorporates working with maps, coordinate systems, projections, spatial analysis, raster and vector data and database systems. Familiarisation with GIS software (ArcGIS), including generation maps, interpretation and analysis and tabular outputs using data from urban planning, transport planning, demography, environmental and civil engineering studies will be taught.
