Foundations of Community Health Work
About this subject
Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to:
- describe the values, philosophies and ethical considerations relevant to case work in the community services sector;
- describe the considerations required for a case worker to effectively plan, coordinate, deliver, evaluate and improve activity in a community services context;
- discuss the ways in which self-reflective practice influences personal and professional development;
- distingush between public and private issues arising in community development work; and
- discuss personal biases in the context of their influence on delivery of ethical and equitable case work services in the community sector.
- Topics will be available to enrolled students in the subjects Learning Management System site approximately one week prior to the commencement of the teaching period.
This unit introduces students to the knowledge and skills required to work within a community development framework. Theoretical foundations are extended to include the distinction between private and public issues in community development work. Knowledge and skills required for optimising individual outcomes when working in socially and culturally diverse settings are examined. There is an emphasis on ethical guidelines, relevant values and philosophical underpinnings for community services work. Self-reflective practice is introduced as a key component of effective community sector case work.
