The subject aims to provide you with a sound understanding of the principles and the practical aspects of Australian Taxation Law in relation to income tax for individuals and other entities. The unit considers the provisions of the Income Tax Assessment Acts of 1936 and 1997 and gives emphasis to the issues of assessable income and allowable deductions in respect of the common law and statutory provisions as well as the impact of offsets and rebates. The unit also considers the Fringe Benefit Tax Assessment Act 1986 and the Goods and Services Tax Act 2000.
This unit emphasises presentation and research skills combined with formulation of arguments based on legal principle. In these respects, the unit plays a vital role in professional development of accountants and other professionals such as financial planners.
