About this subject
At the completion of this subject students will be able to:
- understand and think through complex ethical questions
- write clear and cogent literary criticism
- engage in intellectual reasoning at an improved level
- successfully undertake literary-historical research
- speak with some authority about classic American fiction

This subject introduces and surveys some of the topics, themes and developments in canonical American literary fiction by Irving, Poe, Hawthorne, Melville, Twain, Perkins Gilman, Wharton, Hemingway and Fitzgerald. Works by these authors will be studied in their immediate literary and historical contexts with an eye to exploring what makes their writing distinctively American.
