This unit was previously known as HST340 Prehistory to Pompeii: Archaeology in Ancient Italy.

This unit examines Italian archaeology from the Late Bronze Age until the early Imperial period. Topics selected for particular attention include the Villanovan phase; early Rome; the Etruscan civilisation; the early Greek settlements in Italy; the interactions of Etruscans, Greeks and Phoenicians; the impact of Greek and Roman culture on the indigenous peoples of the Italian peninsula, and the archaeology of Pompeii from prehistoric times until its burial in AD79.

At the completion of this unit students will be able to:

  1. understand and discuss methodological and cultural aspects of Italian archaeology
  2. use archaeological evidence for their own research and to assess the conclusions of others
  3. undertake effective analysis of primary data
  4. think independently
  5. write with a convincing analytical style of argumentation.
