This unit examines current and past contexts for writing for children and young adults in Australia and internationally. It investigates trends, issues, literary concerns and developmental influences on children's and young adults’ publishing, and provides opportunity for the student to develop a folio of short original works relevant to the market. 

The student will explore social and cultural issues including gender, race and sub-culture, adult and teenage issues, the position of the writer/reader and literary/political demands being made on producers of younger people’s fiction and poetry in texts today.

At the completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. demonstrate familiarity with current and past contexts for writing for children and adolescents in Australia and internationally
  2. analyse and discuss trends, issues, literary concerns and developmental influences on children's and young adults’ publishing in Australia
  3. engage with the content of the unit through written skills, ie. in academic essay genre or in creative response and exegesis forms
  4. display critical judgment through reading and group discussion, eg. in an online discussion group based on unit readings.
