This unit focuses on ‘play’ - with special emphasis on digitisation and the internet, in various forms including desktop and mobile play. This includes examination of large-scale gaming systems (such as massively multiplayer games and gameworlds), console games, social and causal gaming (like Angry Birds and Farmville), through to critical perspectives on the popular but controversial notion of ‘gamification’ (the application of game mechanics to commerce, e-learning, and fitness, for example), and broader spaces and types of play online. The regional and national specificities of gameplay will also be explored and students will dialogue with diverse debates that deploy specific gaming examples while also offering critical interpretations of play.

At the completion of this unit students will be able to:

  1. analyse the interrelationship of play and game theory practices technology and application
  2. demonstrate a critical understanding of the changing role of games and play in contemporary networked culture
  3. evaluate and assess concrete examples of gaming and gamification in diverse online and cultural settings
  4. develop a critical understanding of the contexts in which games are produced and consumed, from economic and industrial factors to intersections with contemporary media and communication.

Students who have completed WEB309 Web Presence previously are still able to complete the new unit WEB310 but please note that this unit will count as an elective in their course.
