All organisations need to understand strategic intent at a corporate and business unit level and the implications for products and services. To achieve their strategic goals the industry or sector (be it profit, not-for- profit or government) is assisted by a wide range of Information and Communication Technologies (Information Technology). As digitisation and e-commerce have become global in scale, the effective application of Information Technology is now essential to the creation, operation and sustainability of business

This unit will explore these developments and provide a broad understanding of the alignment of Information Technology with business goals and strategies. The design and implementation of Information Technology strategy is central to this unit. Students will review the application of specific information and communications technologies to business in the wider context of changes to organisational structures, systems, cultures and stakeholder relationships. Students will also study the challenges faced by businesses in achieving a return on investment in Information Technology initiatives and the need to evaluate and manage the associated risk.

At the completion of this unit students will be able to:

  1. Identify the relationship between strategy and ICT strategy and their relative contributions to organizational value.
  2. Critically evaluate current developments in corporate and digital business strategy
  3. Critically appraise the value and contribution of Information Technology in a range of organisational contexts.
  4. Critique the nature and significance of innovation in strategy design and implementation.
  5. Analyse the significance of and relationship between resources and capabilities in strategy design and implementation.
  6. Critique the importance of the human dimension to the design and implementation of ICT strategy.
  7. Propose relevant improvements to IT business strategy and discuss the implications of change in an organization.
  8. Apply a holistic perspective  to resolving stakeholder concerns regarding Information Technology strategy
