In this subject pre-service teachers will examine a broad range of leadership styles and management roles in an early childhood context and recognise their own goals for leadership and management, identifying what success will mean in their future professional and personal lives. They will also investigate the issues that shape early childhood leadership such as: policy, legal requirements, political influences, professional ethics and operational management. Additionally, Pre-service teachers will examine advocacy through leadership research and practice and consider ways to advocate for professional and community awareness of the importance of early childhood education.

Leadership and Management in Early Childhood Education

This subject was previously known as EDE332 Early Childhood Literacies.
This subject is premised on an image of young children as social beings and competent communicators from birth. Students analyse theoretical perspectives underpinning teaching and learning of languages and literacy in the years from birth to age 5. Students learn approaches to establishing relationships between the literacy practices of the home and early childhood settings. The subject features a strong focus on linguistic and cultural diversity: students consider how early childhood settings can value children’s individual, social, and cultural ways of knowing to facilitate harmonious transitions and continuity of learning. Students apply observation, interpretation and assessment to documentation of children’s early communications. Students design a learning environment that enables children to access a wide range of materials and situations for communication.

Explore the relationship between home literacy practices and those in early childhood settings. Focus on linguistic and cultural diversity by learning to recognise children’s individual, social, and cultural ways of knowing.

Early Childhood Literacies

This is the second in the suite of professional experience subjects and includes both a theory and a practical component (a placement in an Early Learning Centre). This subject will require the practical application of curriculum and early childhood pedagogy appropriate to young children in early learning centres. Planning and implementing high quality learning experiences and supportive environments to maximise learning opportunities for infants, toddlers and young children will be a feature of this subject. The theoretical component includes roles and responsibilities, planning and programming learning environments, health and safety, fostering cognitive, language, emotional and social development, as well as observing and documenting learning. The subject will examine national and state laws and policy and the impact these have on early learning environments, families and children. Students will be provided with an opportunity to develop a leadership style through engaging with the organisational culture and professional learning community while attending a practicum in an accredited Early Learning Centre working with babies, toddlers and young children. The placement will comprise of a 1 day visit for 5 weeks aligned to five theory topics immediately followed by a block of 15 consecutive days. Students will aim to build collaborative partnerships with families and colleagues during the placement. All required clearances to work with children must be obtained and valid, and all other professional experience requirements met. Early Childhood Professional Experience 2: Quality Frameworks in Early Learning Centres

This subject was previously known as EDE492 Leadership in Early Childhood Education.
This subject provides the opportunity to develop foundational leadership skills and knowledge expected of contemporary early years educators. The subject examines the theory and practice of leadership in early childhood education, and students use an enquiry process to investigate and reflect on the leadership roles and responsibilities of early childhood educators across a range of dimensions. These include ethical approaches to leadership, regulatory requirements, advocacy, pedagogical leadership, and working in partnership with colleagues, families and the wider community.

Leadership in Early Childhood Education

This subject was previously known as EDE262 Visual and Media Arts for Early Childhood.Through engagement with Visual and Media Arts, this subject focuses on the principles, planning and delivery of authentic forms of arts education in early childhood settings for children aged birth – 8 years. Inquiry-based learning that embraces exploration, creativity, self-expression, meaning-making and the communication of ideas is presented within a child centred learning context. Planning for arts learning is examined within the framework of the National Quality Framework for Early Childhood Education and Care, and the Australian Curriculum; and organising programs, environment provocations and pedagogical documentation around a cyclic process of observation, study and responsive planning are practised. This subject provides a global view of early childhood curriculum theories and pedagogical practices. You will learn to create and critically analyse curriculum using theoretical perspectives to further understand ways in which curriculum is connected to pedagogy, play, learning and assessment.

Early Childhood Curriculum

This subject enhances abilities to work in the globalising world equitably and ethically. You will investigate different contexts and policies with the aim of improving learning through professional practice.

Global Early Childhood Professionals

This subject introduces students to the theories and strategies for developing authentic assessment and reporting in early childhood education. Students examine assessment and evaluation as an integral part of the teaching and learning process. They also explore the use of assessment for diagnostic and curriculum development purposes.

Assessment and Reporting in Early Childhood Education

In this subject pre-service teachers will examine childhood in the contexts of a contemporary and changing world. Pre-service teachers engage with historical and contemporary philosophies of early childhood education and care. They will examine the impact of past and current policies and practices and will critically engage with current research and theoretical perspectives informing multiple understandings of children and childhoods. Through engagement with broad range of perspectives, pre-service teachers will be provided with the opportunity to challenge universal representations of child and childhood, to engage with concepts of the multiplicity of childhood and diversity of children&#39;s lived experiences, child agency and children as competent and capable learners and members of a community. A range of contemporary issues and social contexts impacting on children&#39;s learning are examined in relation to diversity and inclusivity, including social, cultural, and religious background, gender, indigeneity, ethnicity, rurality, learning styles and needs.

History and Philosophies of Early Childhood Education

This subject was previously known as EDE411 Social Justice and Diversity in Early Childhood.This subject explores contemporary issues of culture, equity, values and social justice in early childhood pedagogy. The subject proposes an image of the child as a citizen with rights and students analyse the impact of this image in curriculum decision-making. The subject promotes a view of early childhood settings as democratic forums: students critically examine approaches to building relationships with children, families, and communities. Students consider how to redress inequalities and create welcoming spaces for children, educators and families of diverse cultural backgrounds, beliefs, and practices.
