Specifically, the unit is designed to increase students' awareness of 'western' academic conventions, including correct reading, research and writing discourses that apply in English medium, academic institutions like Australian universities. Students will learn the importance of linearity, clarity, logic and coherence within a predefined essay and/or report structure. They will also learn the importance of planning, drafting, proofing, and editing work for grammatical accuracy and range, and for lexical resource (vocabulary). Students will be exposed to a range of techniques and methods required to reliably inform their writing and reporting with content that reflects sufficient research and originality. To practice these skills, students will engage in research, reading and note-making activities designed to identify, locate and extract specific information in response to prescribed topics and assignments. Students will also examine the essential elements of argument, argument analysis, academic integrity and referencing, and will have opportunities to demonstrate a range of skills through set tasks under prescribed conditions.
