Preparing for University Learning is a fully online, open access and preparatory unit designed to enhance students’ understanding and development of the fundamental academic and study skills required at first year university level.Students will learn skills in academic writing, reading, research and critical thinking, along with a range of study techniques designed to ensure a more self-directed and confident learner. Students complete a range of learning tasks and assessments at specified times, under prescribed conditions. They do this in collaboration with tutors and peers available on their online student portal and via the discussion forum.

This unit has a minimum recommended study load of 5-7 hours per week.

To increase students’ confidence and ability in a range of academic and study skills necessary for success at first year, university level.

Specific objectives:

At the completion of this unit it is expected that students will be able to:

  1. Select source material and evaluate it for relevance, reliability and validity
  2. Identify and extract specific information from source material in response to prescribed topics/instructions
  3. Paraphrase and synthesise information from avariety of sources
  4. Take effective notes from source material
  5. Use a referencing system to produce accurate in-textcitations and reference lists
  6. Demonstrate correct use of a linear essay structure including the use of transition for clarity, logic and coherence
  7. Manage their study time effectively
  8. Navigate an online class room
  9. Actively participate in an online classroom.

Please note: Students that have enrolled into or completed PREP04 may find that there is considerable overlap of learning outcomes in this unit.
