Examination of the changing conditions of children's lives within the family in Australia, protecting the well-being of children within the family and ways of incorporating children's voices will be undertaken. An underlying theoretical approach is taken from the literature of children's rights, the sociology of childhood and the ecology of human development. The ways in which institutions, families and community settings respect children's provision, protection and participation rights will be examined.

HSV7042 Contemporary Issues for Children and Families aims to enable students to gain the necessary knowledge and skills for working with children 0-18 years and their families in complex contemporary times. Contemporary issues that impact upon children and families will be explored. Multiple perspectives and understandings in relation to work with children and their families will be considered; in particular, notions of diversity will be highlighted, contextualized and debated.

After successfully completing this unit you should be able to:

  1. Understand and evaluate the importance of making space for multiple perspectives, when engaging with work with children and their families.
  2. Explore and debate contemporary notions of children, childhood, family and parenting, in order to inform how such notions work to both constrain and enable participation in social practice.
  3. Evaluate the importance of utilizing a strong sense of justice when building partnerships with all stakeholders involved with children and families.
  4. Critically analyse present social practice and how specific forms of practice come to be normalized as representing truthful understanding of how work with children is conceptualized.
  5. Explore the complexities relating to the notion of diversity and propriety that effect children and families in contemporary, complex times.
  6. Develop critical reflective research and analytic skills.
  7. Challenge existing views of practice in order to explore new possibilities for work with children and their families.
