In this subject, you will first be introduced to concepts fundamental to the understanding of Human Physiology such as the organisation of the human body, homeostasis, basic cell structure and function, body fluids and the movement of molecules within body fluid compartments. The basics of nervous system and endocrine system function in the context of physiological regulation and homeostasis will then be explored. This information will provide the foundation for the study of major organ systems of the body including the muscular, digestive, cardiovascular, immune, respiratory, renal, and reproductive systems. This subject will also include content on metabolism of nutrients and acid-base homeostasis.

Map the complex architecture of the human body and learn how it’s organised and structured. Navigate the journey of the smallest cell to the largest organ. Observe how the body performs and adapts, responding to stress and disease to maintain life.

Introduction to Human Physiology

The aim of this course is to provide knowledge of the normal function of the human body and the ways in which the bodily systems integrate with each other.The content of this course will cover several topics: Neuromuscular system: nervous system organisation - autonomic, somatic, sensory, pain, musculoskeletal control and function. Endocrine system: homeostatic control, hormone action, classes and glands, hypothalamic pituitary-organ interactions, reproductive hormones, thyroid hormones and abnormalities, clinical perspectives of hormones related to fuel metabolism, diabetes and stress. Cardiovascular system: the heart, circulatory system, cardiovascular control, blood pressure, cardiovascular disturbances. Respiratory system: respiratory mechanics, gas exchange, gas transport, control of respiration, respiratory diseases (restrictive, obstructive), extreme conditions (exercise, altitude). Cardio-respiratory integration: cardio-respiratory control during exercise, ventilation-perfusion matching. Urinary system: renal processes and control (glomerular filtration, tubular reabsorption and secretion), fluid balance, acid-base balance. Physiology

The two-way science subject explores the intersection between Western and Indigenous Science knowledge. We will explore the deep connection that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have with the land, waters, and sky, and how this has been fostered throughout the millennia. This knowledge encompasses areas of knowledge such as medicine, engineering, ecology, astronomy and sociology. Students will broaden their understanding of Indigenous pedagogy and knowledge transfer, how both Western and Indigenous cultures can mutually benefit from utilising Indigenous science Knowledges, as well as investigating the ways in which students can do so regarding their own field of study. This subject will outline specific disciplines which have benefited from the integration of Indigenous Knowledges, and students will have the opportunity to hear from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders and knowledge holders, engage in practical exercises, and participate in field trips. Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. Becoming a Scientist

Students will be introduced to the rapidly expanding and influential field of information technology which comprises various types of technologies in computers (both hardware and software) and computer networks. It is therefore relevant to students in a wide range of disciplines: for examples, health sciences, business, engineering and technology. Students will be taught the fundamental principles of computer operations, different types of input/output and storage devices, computer networks including Local and Wide area networks, information systems, Database, the Internet, the World Wide Web and HTML. Students will acquire the knowledge and practical skills in information technology and be able to apply them to their field of study.

Inside Information Technology

This subject was previously known as Architectural Technology in Context.This subject acknowledges regional, national and international environmental responsibilities by introducing students to principles of environmental design and decarbonisation. It explores relationships between climate and design using passive techniques that influence the thermal, lighting and acoustic performance of small scale buildings in the local context. In this subject, we are going to explore the science underlying what you do in your garden, why your plants respond to your gardening, and how plants grow and reproduce. What we hope that you will gain, is a much clearer understanding of the fundamentals:<ul><li>how to identify plants - what the critical features are that enable you to recognise some of the more common plant families</li><li>how plants grow - the relationship between the internal structure of plants and their use of water and light to grow</li><li>what plants need from the soil – what are the properties of soil and its inhabitants that contribute to healthy growth of plants?</li><li>how plants know when to grow – what are the signals that tell the plants when to germinate, when to flower, when to burst leaf buds and when to shed their leaves?</li><li>how plants know ‘how’ to grow – what are the underlying controls that shape plants? How do plants respond to pruning, to espaliering, to cutting back and deadheading? and lastly</li><li>how do we multiply plants – how does vegetative propagation work? How does grafting work? This subject will explore the exciting field of virtual reality, mixed reality and the advanced concepts and technologies for interfacing humans with complex machines. We will discuss their potential impact on the way we think about computers and the way we interact with them. The subject will provide an introduction to advanced human-computer interfaces such as Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Tangible User Interface (TUI) technologies. Interface design principles will be reviewed from human factors and technological perspectives. Hardware, software, and design aspects of virtual interfaces will be investigated. We will also learn about these virtual interfaces designed and implemented in medicine, education, design and entertainment. Hands-on experience will be provided through a series of tutorial sessions to provide basic skills on using different tools to develop students&#39; own simple interface applications.Completing this subject will provide you with an opportunity to obtain the Unity Certified User: VR Developer professional industry certification via completion of a certification exam.

Virtual and Mixed Reality Technology

In this subject, you will learn how scientific techniques can be used to answer archaeological questions. Through the exploration of a virtual simulated site, students are introduced to the theory behind a range of common archaeological science techniques, applying this to their own archaeological datasets. Students uncover, analyse and interpret archaeological data on past landscapes, dating, materials analysis, biochemical techniques and bioarchaeology. We will investigate how to interpret scientific data and how this is in turn used in archaeological interpretation, improving scientific literacy in both academic and professional contexts.This is a level 2 subject. Please consider the subject credit point requirement before enrolling. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.
