Students completing this subject will have acquired knowledge of existing health service models, the internal and external factors that influence the delivery of quality services, and the best-practice models for quality service design.

Students will undertake a project in the area of either health management, quality, risk, clinical or corporate governance. This may be either conducted in a health industry placement under the supervision of the lecturer and nominated preceptor or undertaken as a research project in a relevant coursework area that the student has selected. Project findings will be reported in either a journal article format or industry report and be presented to either peers and/or members of the host organisation.

Applied Health Services Project

This capstone subject builds on previous units in the course that focused on organisational culture and management (HLSC603), quality and safety in health care (HLSC604), leadership (HLSC605) and workforce management (HLSC606). These are critical aspects for effective leadership in a healthcare environment. Understanding organisational culture is essential for leading staff in managing resources for innovative practice improvement and implementing change processes.This subject is essential for students to be able to use advanced knowledge and skill to create strategies for organisational change founded on an evidence-base and critical application of change theory, collaborative communication, workforce management and effective leadership. As leaders in driving change, students will be supported in developing and applying the skills necessary to predict potential outcomes of change and the impact on workforce, organisational performance and safety and quality improvement.The aim of this subject is to develop health care leaders who will demonstrate competencies necessary to address health service challenges and lead staff in opportunities for socially responsible change, capacity building and quality improvement in a complex, evolving environment from both a national and international perspective.

Leading Change in Health Services

This subject will critically examine the processes and activities to identify, monitor and improve key elements of aged care organisational functioning, within complex health networks. A review and critique of governance arrangements, including accountability and transparency requirements for staff, managers and boards will be undertaken. Requirements for performance metrics, organisational and clinical outcomes and reporting arrangements will be debated. Students will have opportunities to hear from experts across Australia and participate in industry case studies and analysis.

This course is aimed at developing your understanding of the responsibilities that all aged care staff have in ensuring high-quality care. This subject will introduce you to the quality, safety and regulatory systems that govern service delivery, reporting and accreditation. Principles, policies, standards and guidelines will be considered in the context of the individual, the consumer and the organisation. A cycle of continuous quality improvement involving planning, implementation, evaluation and adaptation will be emphasised, including the central role of consumers in these processes. You will also explore the importance of organisational vision and values and individual role responsibility and accountability in the achievement of quality and safety outcomes.

The organisational resilience and communication fields of knowledge provide frameworks to review clinical governance arrangements. Additionally, quality improvement theory, techniques and approaches are addressed to equip professionals with the practical skills to enhance safe, high-quality care. This knowledge is used to investigate how to achieve effective performance and monitoring systems.To operationalise these requirements, this subject investigates the application of the National Safety and Quality in Health Service (NSQHS) Communicating for Safety and Recognising and Responding to Acute Deterioration Blood Safety Management Standards. Their necessity and integration with other standards in the NSQHS are also reviewed.

Communicating Safety and Quality in Healthcare

The implementation science and organisational reliability fields of knowledge are drawn upon to illuminate safety and quality centrality to clinical governance. This knowledge is used to investigate how to achieve effective performance and monitoring systems that support and promote clinical safety and quality, accountability and transparency within organisations for healthcare users, the workforce and community.To operationalise these requirements, this subject investigates the application of the National Safety and Quality in Health Service (NSQHS) Preventing and Controlling Infections and Medication Safety standards. Their necessity and integration with other standards in the NSQHS are also reviewed.

Integrating Governance Systems and Structures into Safety and Quality in Healthcare

This subject introduces students to management in diverse health care environments. It explores the complexities and challenges of health care management, and examines theoretical and contemporary evidence-based practice perspectives through review of current research. Concepts of managing change, motivation, conflict,  information, human resources, community engagement and organisational behaviour are discussed in the context of Australian health care  organisations. This subject is suitable for health professionals working in leadership and management roles, and those aspiring to do so.
