Motor Mechanic

Motor Mechanics are primarily responsible for diagnosing and repairing motor vehicles and other internal combustion engines. They also may maintain or test engines or vehicles.

Duties and tasks

  • Answering customers questions about the repair process
  • Dissembling engines to check and repair parts
  • Performing maintenance activities such as oil changes and other tune-ups
  • Reassembling the parts after the repair process
  • Repairing and replacing parts as needed
  • Running tests to diagnose problems with engines and smaller parts
  • Testing repaired motors and engines for roadworthiness, environmental requirements, and safety

  • Ability to manipulate and control dials, switches, and gauges
  • Active listening
  • Mechanical ability
  • Troubleshooting and repair capabilities
  • Working with tools and other equipment

Working conditions

Motor Mechanics often work in auto shops or repair centre's. They may also work in chain establishments or car sale lots.
