Education leadership study FAQs

What is a postgraduate education leadership course?

A postgraduate education leadership course will prepare you for senior roles in the education system, or to excel even further in an existing leadership role. You will deepen your understanding of educational administration, curriculum design, educational technology and research development, among other areas.

These courses are designed for existing education practitioners with a recognised teaching qualification, or students with a bachelor degree in a non-teaching discipline with at least three years of leadership experience.

What do you learn in an education leadership course?

Depending on your course, you will improve your leadership skills in education by learning about:

  • Leadership theories and principles
  • Curriculum design, pedagogy and assessment
  • Education psychology and student mental health
  • Leading policy and organisational change
  • Leading inclusive learning environments

You can also choose to specialise in an area like leadership in STEM education, Catholic education, wellbeing and positive mental health in education, or sports education.

Why should I study an education leadership course?

You should study an education leadership course if you want to increase your knowledge as an education practitioner or step into a leadership role. Continuing education is an important part of retaining your skills and a postgraduate education course can be a great way to keep growing your knowledge with updated and current theory.

Why should I study education leadership online?

You should study this area online if you’re looking for a flexible and accessible way to complete a postgraduate qualification. As an online student, you’ll be able to fit your coursework around other commitments such as full-time work or family responsibilities. You’ll be able to watch lectures and complete class activities in the evenings or on weekends, without disrupting your current schedule.

Why should I study online through Open Universities Australia?

While you enrol through us, you will study online with the university that provides your degree. So you can rest assured that you’ll graduate with the same qualification as an on-campus student. Is a postgraduate education course worth it?

A postgraduate education course will equip you with new skills and knowledge in education, which is important for your development. If you’re a teacher, then a postgraduate education course can also count towards your annual continuing professional development (CPD) requirements.

Importantly, a postgraduate education course can help you further your career and make you an attractive candidate for a leadership position. Graduates go on to become school principals or take on other executive positions within schools. Others go on to become leaders in educational administration, educational policy or curriculum development.
