Higher education
Maritime & Logistics or Shipping Operations
- Successful completion of an Australian Associate Degree degree or equivalent (or higher) AND at least two years' work experience; OR
- A Graduate Certificate in Maritime Management; OR
Maritime Technology
- An undergraduate degree in engineering; OR
- A Graduate Certificate in Engineering
Work and Life
Maritime & Logistics or Shipping Operations
- A professional qualification such as a Certificate of Competency as a Master Class 1 (Unlimited) or Engineer Class 1/Chief Engineer (Unlimited) AND at least two years' work experience;
Maritime Technology
- A professional qualification in engineering such as a Certificate of Competency Chief Engineer or Engineer Class 2
If a first degree or professional qualification is not held, candidates may apply to the Department of Maritime and Logistics Management for consideration of their eligibility. These applicants are assessed on their work experience, other qualifications and current managerial responsibilities.

The Graduate Diploma of Maritime Management is an ideal management course for people seeking to acquire specific management skills appropriate for the maritime industry. The course provides graduates with the extensive knowledge and analytical skills required to meet challenges facing the maritime industry and to enhance their career opportunities in management positions in the industry.
The maritime industry is at the forefront of international trade for sustainable development and is an exciting, dynamic, and challenging industry in which to work. The Graduate Diploma of Maritime Management course consists of 8 units that provide practical and applied knowledge suitable for both higher level professional and managerial roles. The course helps graduates develop a holistic and analytical perspective of the industry and equips them to develop solutions for complex issues faced by both domestic and international maritime business activities.
This Graduate Diploma course provides a pathway to the MBA in Maritime Management.
Recommended Study Pattern
Students will complete eight units but the units that students will complete will depend on whether students are assessed as having a cognate or non-cognate background.
A cognate undergraduate degree would be in the same or related area eg, maritime management, logistics management, supply chain management, nautical science, marine engineering, maritime engineering (naval architecture, ocean engineering), and business management; or any Bachelor degree with a major in business, logistics management, and supply chain management
A Cognate industry experience would be in the fields of maritime, transport, logistics and supply chain.
For students undertaking full-time study the following study pattern is recommended.
