This subject introduces you to the key concepts of finance, providing the foundation for making informed financial decisions. You will critically analyse and apply financial theory to demonstrate your understanding of the financial environment and solve financial problems. The course will equip you with the skills to identify, source, apply, and interpret relevant accounting, economic, and financial information, utilising digital technologies and communication skills to support your decision-making. Additionally, you will reflect on your own financial goals, risk profile, and plans, fostering personal responsibility for your learning and self-development. Through this subject, you will build the essential knowledge and skills needed to navigate financial challenges and effectively manage financial resources in various contexts.

Finance defines the process by which individuals and businesses raise and manage funds. Financial skills are a prerequisite for success not only if you are seeking a career in banking and finance, but equally for success in any business career. Indeed, financial literacy is a skill required to successfully manage your personal financial well-being. In this subject, through lessons in our financial trading room and industry-related content, you will examine the nature of the financial environment and the types of financial decision-making required to succeed, both from a business and an individual perspective. You will develop an understanding of the concept of the time value of money, methods of valuing various financial assets such as shares and bonds, and methods of project evaluation. You will consider the trade-off between risk and return in relation to investment assets, and its importance in understanding portfolio theory, and the cost of capital for a business. Finally, you will be able to define a study plan and potential financial career paths.

Personal Finance integrates economics and personal finance concepts, such as interest rates, time value of money, probability, diversification and biases in consumer finance, to help students appreciate the implications of economic events and the complexities of financial decision-making. You will gain economic and financial literacy to better plan for your future and make more informed financial decisions through practical financial decision-making applications, including saving, investing and planning for retirement, evaluating student loans and mortgages, and personal taxes. Students should not enrol in the subject if they have completed 1205AFE Personal Finance at Griffith University.

This subject was previously known as BAN23 Introductory Finance.This subject introduces students to several crucial finance concepts and areas: time value of money, project and asset valuation, risk and return and price of money. International finance refers to a branch of financial economics that deals with monetary systems and economics that surpass national borders. This field focuses on global capital markets through monitoring and examining trade practices across borders, global investment flows and movements in foreign exchange rates. This subject provides you with the skills necessary to understand and address some of the multi-faceted issues of the international financial environment. International finance draws upon ideas and techniques from various fields, including financial management, international trade, macroeconomics, and investment theory.

Corporate finance covers important long-term financial decisions made in business organisations. In this subject you will examine Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and gain an advanced and integrated understanding of how to create sustainable value in corporate firms through long-term financial decisions. In the first part of this subject, you will focus on financial analytical techniques such as financial mathematics, valuation of bonds and shares and the relationship between risk and return. In the second part, you will explore the way these financial analytical techniques apply to long-term financial decisions. You will gain the skills and knowledge needed to determine what type of assets to invest in, how to raise the necessary funding, how to choose the mix of debt and equity, and how to reward shareholders.

Corporate Finance

The aim of this subject is to introduce you to the type of financial information that you, as a manager, can expect to receive and to the techniques that you can use to analyse this information for decision making and control purposes. The subject is therefore written from the perspective of you as a manager of an operating subject in a corporate environment. This approach will provide you with a sound basis by which you can understand, review, analyse and use the various types of financial information with which you are most likely to come into contact.This subject also contains sections in relation to ship and port investment evaluation and finance and shipping business risk management. It aims to enhance your capability in understanding practical financial issues and applying financial concepts in the maritime transport and logistics industry where you may be working.

Finance for Decision-Making

In this subject you will develop and apply the skills necessary to succeed in obtaining employment and a career in accounting and finance. As a graduate, it is essential to be able to demonstrate capability in applying technical skills in a contemporary workplace context together with other professional ‘soft’ skills. In your role as an accountant or finance professional, you will be required to apply critical thinking, decision making techniques and effective communication methods in a range of situations. The workshops will consist of expert guest presentations, discussion topics, and role plays. You will create a portfolio of activities that demonstrate your professional qualities and skills in applying your knowledge to generate relevant recommendations and solutions.

Pathway to Accounting and Finance Careers

The purpose of the subject is to build an applied understanding of the psychological biases which influence financial decision-making. The behavioural finance perspective of decision-making is contrasted with more traditional finance perspectives. This enables a unique interpretation of market anomalies and asset pricing bubbles. The applications of the subject are across corporate finance and investment management.

Behavioural Finance

Global sustainability challenges – including climate change, natural resource depletion, and rising inequality – are affecting the commercial environment in a way that presents both risks and opportunities for the financial sector. This subject studies the evidence of how environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors matter and explains in detail how to incorporate these in company financial models and strategies, equity investing, bond investing, and bank lending. The subject equips students with knowledge, understanding and ability to apply the key principles and core practice of green and sustainable finance. Specific aims are to increase the student’s knowledge and understanding of:• climate change and its impacts• climate risks and emerging environmental and sustainability risks• the evolution of green and sustainable products and services in the banking, investment, and insurance sectors• increasing awareness of the role of the finance sector and finance professionals in supporting the transition to a low-carbon world.
