Developing Modern Languages Conversational Skills

This subject includes a basic overview of approaches, methods, and techniques used in teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). It focuses on developing successful classroom practices that address the learning needs and interests of culturally diverse and language minority students. Students in this subject will have the opportunity to apply what has been discussed in the workshops to hands-on teaching practices and detailed lesson planning.

This subject enables you to extend your proficiency in a European language (French, Italian, or Spanish) by examining literature and the arts from a comparative, global and critically diverse perspective.Through research-led teaching, the close reading of texts will enable you to advance your second language skills, by deepening your knowledge of the historical development of the language and its stylistic features.The critical analysis of important texts across history enables you to develop in-depth knowledge of the key writers and themes, along with the literary, philosophical, and political movements associated with world literatures.You will also gain greater understanding of how literary culture shaped and was shaped by colonial movements, its impact on the colonised, and postcolonial subjectivities.To ensure the topic you enrol in is appropriate for your Program of Study, you must apply for permission to enrol at least three weeks prior to the commencement of the relevant trimester.2026 topics<ul><li>Trimester 1<ul><li>There are no French, Italian or Spanish topics available in LANG303 in Trimester 1.</li></ul></li><li>Trimester 2<ul><li>Spanish:<ul><li>Travellers&#39; Tales: The Invention of Latin America</li></ul></li></ul></li></ul>In many ways, literature defines society by reflecting the attitudes and values of the writer and the depiction of society at large. This subject gives you an exploration of how the Latin American people, landscape and culture have been defined through the writings of European, North American and Australasian travellers. Studying this history will enable you to appreciate how the concept of Latin America has evolved since Columbus&#39;s writing, and to develop a deeper perception of Latin American culture. The focus of the subject is of particular interest to Australasian students because of the intercultural links between Oceania and Latin America. <ul><li>There are no French or Italian topics available in LANG303 in Trimester 2.</li></ul>

European Literature and Languages: Historical Perspectives

This subject will support you to gain the theoretical understandings, skills and methodologies to provide learning and teaching experiences within the Languages domain. You will be required to develop a comprehensive and coherent base of theoretical understandings upon which to base future learning and teaching experiences, which will suit the diverse contexts in which Languages teaching may occur. You will begin to explore and apply to practice contemporary language teaching theories, methodologies, principles and practices as expressed in the ACARA Curriculum: Languages. Current issues in Language teaching will be critiqued to develop the learners professional understanding of being a Language educator. This is the first of two sequential language (Languages / TESOL) teaching methodology units for Master of Teaching students.

Spying has long been a mainstay of wars and international diplomacy. This subjectexamines the development of modern intelligence gathering by exploring a range of historical events in which espionage played an important role; the evolution of signals intelligence and code-breaking; the role of special operations, covert actions and state-sponsored assassinations; the motivations and impact of spies and traitors within intelligence organisations, particularly during the Cold War; the expansion of surveillance during and beyond the War on Terror; and the broader legal, political and ethical issues that are raised when spying becomes a normalised part of international statecraft.Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. The Modern History of Intelligence, Counter-Intelligence and Spies

This unit introduces students to foundational skills and concepts in the study of modern history from the late eighteenth century. Students will traverse the world from 1789 to 2001 looking closely at the role of revolution and the emergence of the nation-state, as well as the cost to humans and the natural world of economic growth and colonisation. Beginning with the French Revolution, the unit investigates conflict and change in the quest for equality and citizenship, telling the story of democratic aspirations in the modern world, including competing visions of modernity. It considers those excluded along with the new forms of solidarity and enmity created against the backdrop of rapid industrialisation, capitalism and environmental change. Students will build a foundational chronology of the modern world and develop skills such as critical and analytical thinking, effective communication and empathy. Making the Modern World

This unit will introduce you to the history and philosophy of science and assist in the development of your critical thinking skills. You will be challenged to question openly the accuracy of mainstream information and the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in enabling misconceptions. You will develop basic AI literacy skills, evaluate health claims and become equipped to communicate health information accurately and effectively. This unit combines theoretical learning with practical activities that will engage you in real-world health challenges.

Misconceptions in the Modern World

Building on the range of concepts and tools introduced to students in ENGL1001 Literature: From Medieval to Modern, this subject focuses on how literature developed throughout the twentieth century to the present day. It analyses how English, Australian and American writers – poets, playwrights, novelists, graphic novelists and screenwriters – responded in profoundly intellectual and visceral ways to the wars, calamities, technological change and digital disruptions of what Eric Hobsbawm calls the ‘Age of Extremes’. We trace patterns of alienation and anomie, but also the growing urgency of hope and human rights in literary responses to the modern world. Continuing to develop university level skills in critical reading, textual analysis and writing about literary texts, this subject also introduces students to theories of visual literacy and critical studies, equipping students with the tools to interpret different kinds of narratives.

Seek to understand how poets, playwrights, novelists, graphic novelists and screenwriters responded to the world around them – including wars and technological change – reflecting this in their texts. Build on your skills in critiquing narratives.
