Farm Worker (Crops)

Farm Workers prepare the soil for seeds and starts, tend to the plants during the growing season, and harvest crops when they are mature. The work requires labourers to be physically fit and able to lift, bend, and crouch repetitively in varying weather conditions. Farm workers can have migrant employment, working during various parts of the growing season and move to different locations as crops ripen.

Duties and tasks

  • Fertilise, remove weeds, and apply pesticides
  • Harvest, inspect, sort, and load crops for shipment
  • Irrigate fields and maintain sources of water and equipment, such as pumps and pipes
  • Make small repairs and maintain farm equipment
  • Prepare soil for planting
  • Use machinery and tools to plant, cultivate, and harvest crops

Working conditions

Farm Workers generally work outdoors in fields, orchards, and on farms; they may be exposed to all kinds of weather conditions. Because of the setting in which they work, labourer's have limited access to drinking water and restroom facilities. They are sometimes exposed to pesticides and fertilisers, so safety procedures must be followed to reduce health risks. The work is seasonal; therefore, workers may have periods of unemployment before planting or harvest time. They may also travel to various locations as different crops ripen, and work long hours during seasonal peaks.
