About this subject
At the completion of this subject students will be able to:
- engage competently and respectfully with diverse cultures as well as the contextual, creative and professional practices of a workplace
- demonstrate an innovative, creative or entrepreneurial approach in finding a placement and/or dealing with a challenge or opportunity during the practicum
- reflect upon the application of skills and theory in a professional or creative context
- communicate outcomes of practicum for potential employers, patrons or funding agencies in a globally engaging way
- Students will undertake a placement in a relevant industry, institutional, community or other organisation in order to complete a work-based project/practicum under the guidance of a supervisor in association with an organisational partner.
This subject presents students with the opportunity to hone their professional and/or creative skills while undertaking a placement in a relevant industry, institutional, community or other organisation. Students will validate their theoretical and professional knowledge in practical situations. The goal of the subject is for students to complete a work-based project/practicum under the guidance of a supervisor in association with an organisational partner. The outcome of the practicum/attachment will reflect the student’s engagement in the practical setting, their professional experience and their contribution to creative or professional output.
Please Note: If it’s your first time studying a Curtin University subject you’ll need to complete their compulsory ‘Academic Integrity Program’. - Placement requirements - Students are expected to research host organisations to understand their potential for offering a suitable practicum or project experience. Before commencing a placement, they are also expected to research the history, mission and operational context of their host organisation and their position or department in the organisation.

- This is in the range of 20 to 24 hours of study each week.

What’s a single subject?
Single subjects are the individual components that make up a degree. With Open Universities Australia, you’re able to study many of them as stand-alone subjects, including postgraduate single subjects, without having to commit to a degree.
Each of your subjects will be held over the course of a study term, and they’ll usually require 10 to 12 hours of study each week. Subjects are identified by a title and a code, for example, Developmental Psychology, PSY20007.
How can I use single subjects to get into a full degree?
First, find the degree that you would like to study on our website.
If that degree allows entry via undergraduate subjects, there will be information about this under the Entry Requirements section. You will find a list of 2-4 open enrolment subjects you need to successfully complete to qualify for admission into that qualification.
Once you pass those subjects, you will satisfy the academic requirements for the degree, and you can apply for entry.
